The Naming of Floydada, Texas
"CONFUSION IN NAMES"
From page 19, Special Edition of The Hesperian,
vol. X, number 38, Floydada, Texas, Thursday, 21 December 1905, by
Claude V. Hall:
"When the section
[1 sq. mile of land] on which Floydada was platted, the new town was
christened Floyd City. After the County [Floyd] was organized application
was made to the Post Office Department for the establishment of a post
office bearing the name of Floyd City; but it was rejected for the
reason that there already existed a post office in Hunt County, in
this State, called Floyd. The similarity of names was too marked for
the application to create a new post office of the name of Floyd City
to be considered favorably by the Post Office authorities in Washington.
The promoters of the new town were not to be daunted because of this
failure. Application was then made for a post office under the designation
of Floydalia. The Post Office Department considered this application
favorably, but the name submitted was misunderstood and recognized
as Floydada.
The foregoing refutes the popular belief and illusion that Floydada is
a combination of the word Floyd and the Christian name Ada. The name Floydada
is purely a mistake, not a design. It is an easy matter for people to draw conclusions
that are palpably illusive."
We like Floydada just fine but do want
to remind you that this mistake demonstrates that government has long
had trouble with quality, even with basic functions.
